KEY POINTS

  • Real Madrid signed Eden Hazard at $113 million
  • Hazard has scored only 5 goals so far for Real
  • Reece James is contracted with Chelsea until 2025

Real Madrid are reportedly interested in signing Chelsea defender Reece James ahead of the January transfer window.

Real Madrid are planning to offer Chelsea back their star winger Eden Hazard but in exchange for James, reported Catalan publication El Nacional.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich still rates Hazard highly and he would be happy to bring the Belgian forward back to London but he wouldn’t want to do it by losing James, one of his best talents at present, according to Goal.

Hazard, who moved from Chelsea to Real Madrid at a hefty price of $113 million in 2019, has failed to justify his price tag and replicate his form that brought much success while at Stamford Bridge. Hazard finished his Chelsea career with 110 goals in 352 competitive matches.

Meanwhile, Hazard’s journey in the Spanish capital has been marred by various injuries. As he is into the third season at Real Madrid, Hazard has managed to bag only 57 appearances, across all competition, and has netted only five goals.

Contradicting to that, the 22-year-old James is one of the brightest players at Chelsea at present. The England right-back has been a vital cog of the Chelsea side that has played four finals in the last couple of years, including the UEFA Champions League final, which the Blues won by beating league rivals Manchester City 1-0.

In addition, with captain Cesar Azpilicueta getting older, James becomes even more important as the only other right-back in the squad.

It is understood that Real Madrid are looking to offload Hazard during the upcoming winter or summer market.

Los Blancos are facing a tough time in the right-back position and Carlo Ancelotti is looking to strengthen it ahead of the January market. Currently, the only traditional right-back in the team is Daniel Carvajal. However, the Spanish defender has been having a very bad time due to injury, leaving the club to use Lucas Vazquez in the position.

It won’t be easy for Real Madrid to land James, who is contracted with his boyhood club until 2025 and has a current market value of $61 million, according to Transfermarkt.
