  • Three models are affected by the recall
  • There have been 66 reports of the vacuums 'smoking and emitting a burning odor'
  • Affected customers can receive a free replacement battery pack

BISSELL has recalled some of its wet and dry vacuum cleaners because they may pose a fire hazard. Some 61,000 units are affected by the recall.

The problem with the BISSELL Cordless Multi-Surface Wet Dry Vacuum stems from the circuit board inside the units' battery pack, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced. They may overheat and smoke.

The company has received 66 reports of the vacuum cleaners "smoking and emitting a burning odor." The battery pack reportedly caught fire in five cases, resulting in three minor property damages and one burn injury.

It has urged customers to stop using the affected units "immediately." They should remove the unit from the charging dock and locate the model number, which can be found on the product information sticker behind the clean water tank. The affected models are 2551, 2551W and 25519.

Those with affected units should contact the company to get a free replacement battery pack. They can do this by either taking the unit to an authorized BISSELL service center or requesting a free in-home repair visit from an authorized service technician.

People should not repair the product themselves, the company stressed, adding that consumers should stop using the recalled vacuum cleaners "even though your product appears to be safe."

The recalled units were sold at Walmart stores nationwide, as well as online through various websites such as www.costco.com and www.acehardware.com from January 2019 to November 2022.

Apart from the 61,000 units, some 4,300 units sold in Canada were also recalled.

"This recall does not impact any other BISSELL product," the company said.

Customers can locate the nearest BISSELL Service Center to their location here. They can also contact the company at 855-417-7001.

"At BISSELL, the safety of our consumers is our top priority," the company noted. "We hold the quality of our products and the well-being of our consumers to the highest standards."
