Reese Witherspoon made her friend Kerry Washington's birthday extra special this weekend by posting a sweet tribute for the "Scandal" actress on social media.

Witherspoon took to Instagram to wish Washington a happy birthday to celebrate her turning 44 this Sunday. She shared a picture of them sitting together in a golf cart on what appears to be a studio lot, with Witherspoon sporting a blue dress and Washington in a white top and metallic gold pants.

"Happy birthday to my amazing friend @kerrywashington!!" Witherspoon wrote. "You are a brilliant, creative, passionate force of nature and I am constantly inspired by your grace. Not to mention your incredible sense of style… AM I RIGHT?! Sending you love, my sister / my partner / my friend forever!"

Witherspoon's post received several comments from her followers who also left birthday greetings for Washington.

"Happy bdayyyyyy Kerry love little fires everywhere," one commented. "Two absolute beauties," Annie Potts wrote.

"Love love love the two of you," a third user added. "Please bring more little fires," another wrote referring to their series.

Witherspoon and Washington starred together in Hulu's miniseries adaptation of Celeste Ng's "Little Fires Everywhere." While they might not seem the best of friends in the show, the two share a close bond off-screen.

Washington and Witherspoon have been friends for years and were heavily involved in Time's Up movement. When Witherspoon was casting for the series, she immediately knew that the role of Mia Warren was perfect for Washington.

“When I read the book, I just thought it was a beautiful exploration about different kinds of mothering,” Witherspoon explained during their interview with Variety. "And I thought nobody would be a better scene partner or partner at behind the scenes actually, truthfully, than Kerry. She’s known as such an incredibly professional person, but she’s also a lot of fun."

In the same interview, Witherspoon said she had always dreamed of working with Washington, and when they started spending some time together, she got to know her more. Witherspoon said she valued her fellow actress’ opinions and valued her as a partner.

When asked about a potential Season 2, Washington told Entertainment Tonight that it's unlikely to happen. However, she told fans that she has a number of projects with Witherspoon coming soon.

"So we were never planning to do a Season 2 for 'Little Fires.' It was a limited series. That's all there is, that's all she wrote. Elena and Mia are not coming back," she explained. "But Reese and I, we just adore each other and really loved working together. So we have a few other projects in the works and we'll continue to move those along."
