  • Suryakumar Yadav scored a 50-ball hundred in a List A game Thursday
  • He achieved the feat while batting for Mumbai against Puducherry
  • He helped his side post 457 for 4 in 50 overs

Indian cricketer Suryakumar Yadav surpassed team captain Virat Kohli in a 50-over record while playing a List A match at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in the city of Jaipur on Thursday.

Suryakumar scored a century off 50 balls while batting for Mumbai against Puducherry in the ongoing Vijay Hazare, India’s 50-over domestic tournament. In the process, he scored the second-fastest List A (50-over) century by an Indian batsman, beating Kohli’s record of a 52-ball List A hundred. Interestingly, Kohli had also claimed the record in Jaipur during a One-Day International (ODI) between India and Australia in 2013.

Puducherry won the toss Thursday and opted to field. Making full use of being asked to bat first, Mumbai went berserk with the bat. Mumbai’s skipper Prithvi Shaw remained unbeaten on 227 runs off just 152 deliveries, including 31 fours and five sixes. Meanwhile, Shaw’s 227 was the third-highest List A score by an Indian after his Mumbai teammate Rohit Sharma’s 264, which he had scored against Sri Lanka in 2014 in Kolkata and Shikhar Dhawan’s 248 that had come while batting for India A against South Africa A in 2013 in Pretoria.

En route his 133 off 58 balls, Suryakumar belted 22 fours and four sixes. The massive knocks from Shaw and Suryakumar along with a half-century from Aditya Tare helped Mumbai post a mammoth total of 457 for 4 in 50 overs.

Meanwhile, Yusuf Pathan is the current holder of the record for the fastest List A century by an Indian player. He had reached the three-digit mark off just 40 balls while batting for Baroda against Maharashtra in the 2010 Vijay Hazare Trophy. While it was the third-fastest List A century 11 years back, now Pathan’s 40-ball hundred is seventh in the list of the fastest List A centuries scored by batters across the globe.

The record for the fastest century in a 50-over game currently belongs to former South Africa batsman AB de Villiers, who had scored a 31-ball 100 before finishing his innings on 149 off 44 balls. The innings comprised as many as 16 sixes and nine fours.
