Samsung has announced the Galaxy A8s in China as its very first smartphone to feature a hole in its display. Meanwhile, Huawei sub-brand Honor also teased the Honor View 20, another smartphone with a similar type of display design. Here’s a comparison of the two handsets.

Display

The Samsung Galaxy A8s is the very first smartphone from Samsung that comes with the company’s Infinity-O display. This type of display features a circular cutout near the left corner of the display that houses the device’s front-facing camera. The Galaxy A8s comes with a 6.4-inch display, which is presumed to be an LCD IPS screen supplied by BOE, according to GSM Arena. The Galaxy A8s is also said to have a 2340 x 1080 screen resolution.

As for the Honor View 20, the device also comes with a circular cutout near the left corner of the display, but the company is calling it an “All-View Display.” Engadget reports that the hole in the Honor View 20’s display is smaller because it only has a diameter of 4.5mm. Honor claims that the display hole on the Galaxy A8s has a diameter of 6mm. Honor didn’t provide any information on what type of display panel is on the View 20, but it said to have a screen resolution of 2310 x 1080.

Internals

The Galaxy A8s is pretty much a mid-range smartphone. The handset is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset with 6GB/8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. There’s also a microSD card slot for expanded storage of up to 512GB. It’s also packing a 3,400 mAh battery that supports fast charging through its USB Type-C port.

The Honor View 20 is a true flagship smartphone since it’s powered by the 7nm Kirin 980 chipset, the same SoC that’s powering the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. The Kirin 980 comes with dual-NPU and dual-ISP, which should help in delivering better AI and camera performance, as pointed out by XDA. Unfortunately, Honor didn’t disclose the device’s RAM, storage capacity and battery size.

Cameras

The Galaxy A8s comes with a set of triple cameras on the back — a 24MP main shooter, a 10MP telephoto lens and a 5MP depth-sensing camera. Up front, the Galaxy A8s comes with a 24MP camera with an f/2.0 aperture lens.

The Honor View 20 is only packing a single camera on its back, but it’s equipped with a massive 48MP sensor. Honor confirmed that the camera on the View 20 is powered by Sony’s IMX586 CMOS sensor, which was announced earlier this year. The inclusion of the Sony IMX586 sensor on the Honor View 20 means that it will take better photos in low light conditions.

Release Dates

The Samsung Galaxy A8s will be available to pre-order in China starting on Dec. 21. The company hasn’t provided official information on pricing and if it will ever be released in the United States.

Meanwhile, the Honor View 20 was merely teased and won’t get its formal introduction until Dec. 26, in China. Honor will also be holding a global launch event for the device on Jan. 22, where pricing and launch dates will most likely be announced.
