KEY POINTS

  • The Seahawks remain undecided on who their starting quarterback will be for the coming season
  • Geno Smith reportedly holds an edge over Drew Lock for the position
  • Seahawks coach Pete Carroll clarifies that playing two different quarterbacks next season is possible

The Seattle Seahawks have yet to decide on who the starting quarterback will be for the coming NFL season.

According to head coach Pete Carroll, that won't happen anytime soon.

Carroll talked to the media on Tuesday, August 23 that they will take all the time they need before settling on who their primary play-caller will be.

Geno Smith and Drew Lock are competing for that honor, but the Super Bowl champion coach mentioned that the former is "ahead."

However, Carroll is not dismissing the possibility that Lock could overtake Smith.

The 70-year-old coach did not hint at when he could name who the main quarterback would be for the Seahawks.

However, he did mention that things changed when Lock got sidelined due to COVID-19 last Tuesday.

This was the time when the 25-year-old was about to make his first start of the summer in Seattle's second preseason game against the Chicago Bears.

Since then, Lock has returned to the team and has participated in all three practices this week.

Heading into Friday, August 26, Carroll did not say who would be starting for the Seahawks.

"I'm wide open for whatever happens," Carroll said. "Geno's been the guy in the lead position the whole time, and I've protected that thought throughout. He's done a really nice job. He's been very consistent. So we'll just see what happens. There's two more weeks of practice, too, after this. I had a set thought on what we would do with the timeline but that got disrupted, so we're going to use all the time we need."

So far, Smith has been taking most of the first-team reps as he started against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Lock took all the first-team reps last Tuesday but struggled while feeling sick and testing positive later that day.

However, Lock looked good last August 6 against Pittsburgh, outplaying Smith at the Lumen Field as he had a pair of touchdown passes before committing a late gaffe.

Aside from those, the former second-round pick also lost a fumble when he failed to account for an unblocked rusher off the edge.

Carroll was also asked if there is any possibility he would play two quarterbacks in the NFL regular season.

"I could go ahead and just call it, but I want to let the guys battle and let them show where they are and let us get as much information as possible," the two-time national champion mentor shared.
