After a long wait, “Sherlock Holmes 3” is finally happening. A director has been selected and they are currently working on the script. The plot is currently unknown, but there have been rumors that have hinted at the story and the primary filming location of the film.

Robert Downey Jr. has been busy these past few years playing Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor is now free of that commitment, so he can focus on some of his other projects, including “Sherlock Holmes 3.”

The last film from the franchise was released way back in 2011 titled “A Game of Shadows.” The first two films were directed by Guy Ritchie, but he will not be returning for a third time. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dexter Fletcher will be helming the upcoming movie.

As far as the cast members are concerned, apart from Downey, Jude Law is the only confirmed actor. Law will be reprising his role as the famous detective’s loyal sidekick, Dr. John Watson.

Details about the plot are currently being kept under wraps, but Law previously teased that “Sherlock Holmes 3” will essentially be about the “co-dependence” of Watson and his detective friend, Screen Rant reported. The producers don’t have a title of the film yet, but that will come after they have a final script ready.

The story is expected to take place in San Francisco during the Old West-era. However, there has been no official confirmation about this yet, so it should be treated as a rumor at this point.

Filming will take place in California. The California Film Commission has selected the Downey Jr. movie for a conditional tax credit of $20.8 million for filming in the state, Variety reported.

“Sherlock Holmes 3” will be released on Dec. 22, 2021. Details about the filming schedule and locations are yet to be announced.
