The skeletal remains of a 16-year-old girl, who was allegedly killed and buried by a man inside his house in India two years ago, were recovered Saturday.

The accused, identified as 25-year-old Gaurav Singh, had hatched the plan to kill his girlfriend as he did not want people to know he was dating a minor, according to the Times of India.

Singh's family members reportedly helped him in the killing. After a complaint was filed by the girl's mother when she went missing in 2020, Singh and his family fled the village, which was located in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

The police said Singh and his family members were moving from one place to another frequently, to avoid being arrested.

However, on Saturday, the police arrested Singh and his father. During questioning, they confessed to killing the girl.

Later, a team of investigators arrived at Singh's residence where they dug up a floor to find the victim's skeletal remains.

According to local media, the accused got into a relationship with the victim, while teaching her to ride a bike. The two were neighbors. However, their families were against their relationship, Amar Ujala reported [Google Translate showed].

"Gaurav, along with his parents and two brothers, hatched a plan to kill the girl. On November 21, 2020, Gaurav took her to his home. Here, he, along with his family members, strangulated her to death. To hide the body, family members dug out a corner in one of the rooms and buried the body deep inside. Later, the surface of the room was levelled and covered with wheat husk. The accused along with his family members fled after an FIR was lodged against them based on a complaint filed by the victim's mother on November 23," a senior police officer – identified as Kumar Ranvijay Singh – told the Times of India.

The police said the remains of the victim have been sent for an autopsy. They have also sealed the crime scene.

The authorities are currently looking for Singh's mother and two brothers.

They have not revealed the charges placed against the accused.

A local resident told the Times of India that they thought the accused and the girl had fled to get married.

"We all thought that the girl was alive and living happily with Gaurav," the local said.
