KEY POINTS

  • “Spider-Man: No Way Home” secured $14.1 million in its sixth weekend
  • The Tom Holland starrer topped the box office charts once again
  • “Scream” placed second with its second-weekend sales of $12.4 million

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” killed “Scream’s” quick reign at the box office by reclaiming the top spot six weeks after its release.

Sony’s comic book sequel headed to its sixth weekend with a banger as it outsold other box office competitors in the North American market. After grossing another $14.1 million this weekend, “No Way Home” dethroned the slasher film that topped the charts the previous week.

It’s rare for films to secure the top box office slot on their sixth week, but “No Way Home” managed to outsell its rivals. Variety might have downplayed such feat, however, saying that the movie didn’t have much of a competition.

“Scream” placed second with its $12.4 million sales, securing the 2022 installment in the slasher franchise a $51.3 million ten-day total. The new “Scream” did better in its second weekend compared to 2011’s “Scream 4,” which only earned $7 million during its second weekend.

“Sing 2” landed in third place during its fifth weekend. The animated title accumulated $5.7 million, bringing its worldwide gross to $241.2 million. The fourth and fifth slots were occupied by “Redeeming Love” and “The King’s Man” with their $3.7 million and $1.8 million sales, respectively, as per MarketWatch.

“No Way Home” is on track to beat “Avatar’s” record and become the third-highest grossing movie of all time in the U.S. and Canada. The webslinger has already raked in $721.5 million in total; it only needs another $40.1 million by the end of Presidents’ Day weekend to do so, as pointed out by Deadline.

Globally, the Tom Holland starrer has already crossed the billion-dollar mark. Based on the latest figures, the film became the sixth-highest grossing movie in history with $1.69 billion, beating “Jurassic World’s” $1.67 billion and “The Lion King’s” $1.66 billion in the process.

The success of “No Way Home” is all the more admirable, considering that it managed to break box office records despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the growing concerns over the omicron variant.

However, it would be hard for the comic book adventure to dethrone any of the top five on the all-time worldwide box office charts. Without China, it would be a tough challenge for the film to surpass “Avatar,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “Titanic,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Avengers: Infinity War,” as each of them cracked $2 billion.
