  • "Squid Game" is nominated for Best Show at MTV Movie & TV Awards
  • Jung Ho Yeon is nominated in the Breakthrough Performance category
  • It was named best foreign language series at the Critics Choice Awards

Netflix's "Squid Game" and its lead star Jung Ho-Yeon have scored nominations in this year's MTV Movie & TV Awards.

The hit nine-episode series earned a nod for Best Show and is running against "Euphoria," "Inventing Anna," "Loki," "Ted Lasso" and "Yellowstone." The dystopian series is this year's only non-American show on the list.

Jung is vying for the Breakthrough Performance trophy and is facing off against Alana Haim ("Licorice Pizza"), Ariana DeBose ("West Side Story"), Hannah Einbinder ("Hacks") and Sophia Di Martino ("Loki").

"Spider-Man: No Way Home," "Euphoria," "The Batman" and "RuPaul's Drag Race" are leading this year's MTV Movie & TV Awards nominations.

Fan voting opened Wednesday and will continue until May 18. The awards ceremony will be held on June 5 at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Los Angeles.

"Squid Game" had already won a slew of awards, including the prestigious Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards in February, which made its cast the first Asians to receive the trophies. Its lead actor, Lee Jung-Jae, won the SAG award for "Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Drama series," while Jung won the trophy in the best actress category. "Squid Game" also bagged the award for best stunt ensemble, beating other contenders such as "Cobra Kai," "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier," "Loki" and "Mare of Easttown."

The series also bagged this year's Critics Choice Awards in best actor and best foreign language series categories. Lee won another award, best male performance in a new scripted series, at the 2022 Independent Spirit Awards in March. The 49-year-old veteran actor from South Korea beat fellow nominees Olly Alexander ("It's a Sin"), Michael Greyeyes ("Rutherford Falls"), Murray Bartlett ("The White Lotus") and Ashley Thomas ("THEM: Covenant").

"I know there are lots of 'Squid Game' fans in the world and what you're most curious about is when season 2 will come out. It's on the way. Stay tuned," Lee said in a recorded speech during the event.
