Taylor Swift made history in the recently concluded MTV 2020 VMAs by being the first female solo artist to win the Best Director award, but many believe that The Weeknd deserves it more than her.

The "Folklore" singer won her first Best Director award at the 2020 VMAs on Sunday for her directorial debut in her song "The Man." Swift is the first female solo artist to win the award, People reported. However, some disagreed and preferred The Weeknd for the recognition for his single "Blinding Lights."

"I really wanted The Weeknd to win but, Taylor just won as female director. So, go Taylor!!!" one wrote on Twitter.

"OK TAYLOR IMMA LET YOU FINISH, BUT THE WEEKND HAD THE BEST MUSIC VIDEO DIRECTOR OF ALL TIME," another wrote.

"Yeah The Weeknd lost Best Director Award to Taylor Swift... He was robbed!!!" @raultargaryen9 opined.

Meanwhile, Swift's fans poured her with love following her most recent achievement. They said that the "Love Story" songstress deserved the victory.

"Adore you deserves the award," one wrote.

"Taylor director did that, and we’re proud! Watch The Man to celebrate!" another tweeted.

"TAYLOR SWIFT I AM SO PROUD OF YOU. AFTER ALL THESE YEARS OF PROVING YOUR LEGACY IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE, AND MOVING A GENERATION OF BOTH PEOPLE AND WOMEN TO BECOME JUST LIKE YOU, YOU HAVE WON BEST DIRECTOR WHICH YOU ARE SO LONG OVERDUE FOR #VMAs," another fan added.

In her acceptance speech, Swift acknowledged the voting process and thanked those who supported her music especially those who voted for her music video.

"I was told that this was an industry-voted award. So I want to say thank you to everyone in the industry who voted for this video," Swift said.

"But I also really want to thank the fans because you are the only reason why the industry cares about anything that I do. Everything that you guys have done — ‘Folklore’ this summer — I'm just so blown away and taken aback by your generosity to me. So, thank you for everything. I hope I get to see you soon.”

Meanwhile, The Weeknd also won big at the award ceremony because "Blinding Lights" was recognized as Video of the Year and Best R&B.
