  • Roger Federer is currently recovering from knee surgery
  • Federer still holds the most match wins in a Grand Slam tournament
  • Federer will miss the French Open and return during the grass season

The Big Three of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have been the main names of tennis in the current era. The level of competition of their standard has led to a dominating streak of Grand Slam victories among the three. But with the recent news of Federer recovering from knee surgery, one would think that the 38-year-old would be easily surpassed in the most Grand Slam victories.

It turns out Federer is still alone on top of that category as he leads all players with the most matches won in the Grand Slams. He’s on top at 362 victories as the most successful male athlete in the Majors. His impressive record comes with the number of championships he’s won as he’s also on top with 20.

Djokovic follows with 287 and Nadal with just a few games behind at 275. The big three are joined by legends of the game in the top five as Jimmy Connors follows at fourth with 233 wins and Andre Agassi at fifth with 224. Among the active players, Andy Murray has 189 wins while power hitter Stan Wawrinka has 148.

Interestingly, Murray and Wawrinka are also the last two active players to win a Grand Slam title outside the big three. Both wins came in 2016 as Murray won Wimbledon in front of his home turf and Wawrinka pulled away with the US Open.

Ever since that year, it has been all Federer, Djokovic and Nadal winning the Majors. The most recent one came at the hands of Djokovic as he endured a five-set thriller against Dominic Thiem – earning the Serbian his 17th Grand Slam and 8th Australian Open.

Federer is currently rehabilitating his knee and is expected to miss a good portion of the year. He has already missed the Dubai tournament will sit out Indian Wells, Bogota, Miami and Roland Garros.

He will, however, look into adding more wins to his record by the grass season comes. Perhaps a 21st Grand Slam is on its way by the time Wimbledon is all said and done.
