KEY POINTS

  • The shootout occurred between two male residents, one armed with a shotgun and the other with a handgun
  • Both shooters and four female victims, including a 5-year-old girl, were wounded in the short exchange
  • Police said they believe it was the culmination of a feud between the two families that had reportedly been going for some time

Police in a Houston suburb said six people were recovering Monday after a shootout stemming from an alleged feud between two families.

Harris County Sheriff's Office Capt. Joe Ambriz said police were called to a residential area of Katy, Texas, around 9 p.m. after multiple reports of gunfire. Ambriz said two men, one armed with a handgun and the other with a shotgun, were the only shooters involved and wounded each other in the short exchange. Four women victims, including a 5-year-old girl, were also struck in the shootout before police arrived.

The six victims were reportedly taken to surrounding hospitals for treatment on non-life threatening injuries and are expected to make full recoveries.

Police did not share the identities of the shooters and the victims. No charges have been filed.

“Our goal is to get to the bottom of this,” Ambriz told reporters. “Early on, the preliminary information appears that it was an ongoing disturbance between two neighbors. Unfortunately, when you resort to taking matters into your own hands and getting a weapon, it never turns out to be a good situation for anyone.”

Ambriz said a neighbor came forward after the shootout and shared a short video of an exchange between the two parties.

“As soon as we get the investigation complete, the details will be presented to the Harris County District Attorney's Office and we will see what charges come out of that,” Ambriz said.

The shootout also came hours after a reported shooting in Fort Worth, Texas, that left at least five people wounded. Police said the shooting took place at about 7:00 p.m. at a park where 600 people had gathered for a party despite coronavirus concerns.

An unknown shooter reportedly fired off 30 shots into the crowd after several fireworks went off. Witnesses told reporters they saw police chasing a man away from the park.
