The Tim Tebow experiment in Jacksonville didn’t even make it to Week 2 of the preseason. The Jaguars have released the quarterback-turned-tight end less than 72 hours after their first exhibition game of 2021.

Tebow signed a one-year deal with Jacksonville in May, looking to make the roster as a tight end. At 34 years old, Tebow's roller-coaster NFL career is likely over.

The former quarterback struggled mightily Saturday against the Cleveland Browns with no catches in 16 plays. A pair of Tebow’s unsuccessful attempts at blocking a defender went viral, and it quickly became clear that he didn’t have a future at his new position.

“Thankful for the highs and even the lows, the opportunities, and the setbacks,” Tebow said on Twitter. “I’ve never wanted to make decisions out of fear of failure and I’m grateful for the chance to have pursued a dream.”

It marked Tebow’s first NFL preseason action since 2015 when he played four games with the Philadelphia Eagles. Tebow last played in a regular-season game as a member of the New York Jets in 2012.

It’s been a full decade since Tebow was a starting NFL quarterback. Making only 16 career starts, Tebow posted a 47.9% completion percentage with 17 touchdown passes to nine interceptions.

Before trying to make a comeback as a tight end, Tebow spent three seasons in the New York Mets’ minor-league system before attempting to make the move back to football.

The signing was widely criticized, though Tebow’s brief time in Jacksonville made an impact off the field. In the first week after joining the Jaguars, Tebow had the NFL’s best-selling jersey.

Jacksonville visits the New Orleans Saints Monday night to conclude Week 2 of the 2021 NFL preseason.
