KEY POINTS

  • "Total War: Warhammer 3" is adding RTS mechanics in the new Survival Battle game mode
  • Survival Battles will be fought in each of the four Realms of Chaos
  • Players will need to constantly upgrade their troops and adjust their strategies in every Survival Battle

The final entry in Creative Assembly’s “Total War: Warhammer” series is looking to be the most ambitious one out of all of the previous games with the introduction of the various Chaos Gods to the already-expansive roster of playable factions. But there’s more to the game than just a few more monsters to play against.

Creative Assembly is attempting to make the most immersive “Total Warhammer” game by tying in the IP’s rich lore with some innovative gameplay mechanics. Recently, the developers revealed “Total Warhammer 3’s” first gameplay video featuring the new Survival Battle mode.

The Survival Battle featured in the gameplay footage shows a Kislevite army led by Tzarina Katarin Bokha, one of the most powerful Ice Witches in the lore, assaulting Khorne’s realm. The army of Kislev is tasked with taking the Brass Citadel in order to gain a foothold in the Realm of Chaos.

This new style of gameplay involves multiple capture-and-hold objectives where players must take a power position then defend it from waves of enemies. The final stage will have players fight off a powerful Chaos Daemon (an Exalted Bloodthirster in Khorne’s case) as well as a small detachment of lesser daemons and Chaos warriors.

Creative Assembly has incorporated a few new gameplay mechanics in Survival Battles. Players will be able to build certain types of base defenses like walls, gates, towers and barricades to help fend off attackers.

Players will also be able to keep their troops in top shape with the new Replenishments menu that grant certain recovery effects like healing and stamina restoration. As the battle goes on, players will be able to summon reinforcements to replenish their army’s ranks.

Individual troops can now be upgraded mid-battle, granting them increased combat stats to keep them fighting for longer.

Each encounter will feature more difficult enemy types, encouraging players to upgrade their troops or call in superior soldiers to help break enemy lines.

There will be one Survival Battle per Realm of Chaos, with the realms of Tzeentch, Nurgle and Slaanesh to be featured once the full game releases later this year.
