  • Kieran Trippier is set to make his return to the English Premier League with Newcastle
  • Atletico Madrid accepts a bid worth $16.1 million that they will understandably use to find his replacement
  • Chelsea's Cesar Azpilicueta is reportedly the man whom Atletico Madrid will target to take Trippier's place

The English Premier League is about to deal with a rising power after reports have confirmed that Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier will be joining Newcastle United on a £12 million ($16.1 million) transfer fee.

Transfer guru Fabirizio Romano was the first to break the news via Twitter, citing that Trippier’s desire to leave Atletico Madrid was the biggest key in the whole move and Newcastle United are now preparing to have medical tests to complete the move.

Trippier signed with Atletico Madrid back in 2019 from the Tottenham Hotspurs for a transfer fee of £20 million ($26.3 million) and is now set to make his way back to the Premier League.

Should there be no significant findings during his medical, the 31-year-old is going to be Newcastle United’s first major signing under the new Saudi Arabia-based owners and new manager Eddie Howe’s first transfer signing since taking charge back in November.

Howe is very familiar with Trippier due to their time together at Burnley, while the former was in charge of the club back in 2012, signing him to a permanent deal from Manchester City after a solid loan spell.

Other big-name clubs were heavily linked to Trippier throughout the most recent summer transfer window as teams like Manchester United and West Ham United were pining for his signature.

Sky Sports News’ Kaveh Solhekol spoke with the Transfer Show and revealed that the Trippier signing is a sign of great things to come for the beleaguered club.

“I think other players that have been contacted by Newcastle will now be looking at Kieran Trippier and thinking, 'Well, he's an England international, he is going to make that squad much stronger, he's improved their chances of staying up. Maybe I should be looking at that as well. If he's up for it, maybe I should be up for it as well.' They're in the market for other players, I think they will be trying to do loan deals as well, but it's a fantastic start to the window for Newcastle,” Solhekol said as quoted by Sky Sports.

Madrid-based outlet Diario AS also reported that Atletico Madrid is considering signing Chelsea star Cezar Azpilicueta to replace Trippier at the club, with Chelsea more than willing to sell in order to prevent him from walking for free in the summer transfer window.
