KEY POINTS

  • Harry Kane will stay with Tottenham for the coming season
  • The Spurs will focus on winning a title this season under Nuno Espirito Santo
  • Manchester City is expected to try and acquire Kane next summer

Harry Kane may have finally put a lid on speculations about his future for now.

The English striker announced via Twitter that he is staying with Tottenham although he did not get into detail.

“I will be staying at Tottenham this summer," Kane tweeted. “[I] will be 100% focused on helping the team achieve success.”

The keyword in that statement regarding his decision is the focus. With uncertainty in the air, it was a distraction that the Spurs were clearly out of the way.

However, this only applies for the current season–meaning Kane’s outlook may change next year.

Should that happen, Kane will be in the same dilemma once more. He is still under contract until 2024 although he could opt to stay if Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo can deliver a trophy.

“I think it’s up to us and everybody, the player himself to get this motivation because there shouldn’t be any kind of doubts in terms of motivation to play [for] Spurs,” Nuno said. "Amazing club, good team, we are in the process and we need everybody involved.”

So far, the Spurs are performing well. They scored victories in their first two English Premier League matches under Santo, and things can only get better once Kane is chimed in.

Kane’s tweet was a big turnaround considering he hinted about moving out of Tottenham in May.

At that time, the English striker floated the idea to former Manchester United player Gary Neville in May.

But since then, Kane had been silent. He returned late to Tottenham since he was part of the English national team making a run at the European Championship.

The 28-year-old made his first appearance for the Hotspur against Wolverhampton as a substitute.

Manchester City was widely speculated to be nearing a move for the English footballer, but the numbers just did not add up, the Guardian reported.

The Spurs wanted £150 million ($206 million) for Kane, but the Sky Blues were only willing to shell out £100 million ($137.6 million) in June.

Manchester City was willing to go as far as £127 million ($174 million), but Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy stood firm on their asking price.

With the Kane drama settled at least for this season, most will expect a different story next year.

Depending on how he performs, it will be interesting if Tottenham will relax its asking fee for the prominent striker.
