KEY POINTS

  • Rui Patricio appears to be staying with Wolverhampton
  • AS Roma has yet to pitch an offer to the Wolves for Patricio
  • Patricio may opt to finish his career with the Wolves

Unless something comes up, it appears Rui Patricio will be staying on with the Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper has been linked to a possible move to AS Roma, but no formal offers have been made to date.

This would be good news for Wolves fans who were hoping to see Patricio stay at Molineux Stadium beyond the summer transfer window.

This is despite the growing belief that Jose Mourinho is contemplating luring him to Stadio Olimpico, The Athletic reported.

Ironically, speculations grew as well on who would replace the Portuguese player. Had the move to Roma pushed through, Sam Johnstone or Danny Ward were touted as replacements, according to another report from The Athletic.

But for now, it appears all that has been nothing more than rumored belief. Patricio has shown no indication of wanting to bolt Wolverhampton.

The veteran shot-stopper is likely to be offered a new deal if La Lupa does not make a pitch.

There is no telling how long that potential new deal would be. But the reality of it is that Wolverhampton will have to find suited replacements for Patricio in the coming years.

The Portuguese goalie is in the twilight of his career since arriving in 2018. He has made 127 appearances with the Wolves across all competitions.

For now, Patricio appears content. He owns a weekly deal that nets him £100,000 ($139,000), and extending his stay at Molineux Stadium would be a big boost from his end.

Furthermore, the last thing that Bruno Lage would want right now is switching goalkeepers.

He is still learning the ropes after being named as the team’s new manager earlier this June, BBC reported.

Patricio has proven himself efficient, yet another reason why going for a new goalie does not make sense.

With the clock ticking, Bruno could use that to his advantage and skim the market for potential successors once the Portuguese decides to call it a career.
