Nobody seemed all that happy about episode 3 of “True Detective” Season 2, not critics, not fans, and certainly not the show’s characters, who almost never crack a smile. After episode 2’s huge cliffhanger turned out to be a huge fake-out, the HBO series floundered with its weakest episode yet. However, “True Detective” does not seem to be feeling any pressure to give viewers any added assurance about what lies ahead in episode 4, “Down Will Come.”

The HBO crime series has not yet released a synopsis for the new episode and that might mean big things are coming around the corner. Critics were only given access to the first three episodes of the season, so now everyone is equally in the dark going into episode 4. That makes the lack of a synopsis for the episode particularly curious and foreboding. Fans were upset to find that the shooting of Ray Velcoro (Colin Farrell) appeared to be solely for shock value. Could “True Detective” be gearing up to redeem itself with a major twist or reveal?

The promo for “Down Will Come” does not give too much away either, but it at least teases some of the action coming in the new episode. In the sneak peek video, Frank (Vince Vaughn) runs into more problems retreating down the familiar rabbit hole of the Los Angeles criminal underground when his wife (Kelly Reilly) makes known her disapproval of his behavior. Meanwhile, Ray and Paul (Taylor Kitsch) finally get some one-on-one time together in the squad car working on the case. Ray seems to give the troubled Paul some gruff advice about coping with his past trauma.

“I don’t know how to be in the world,” Paul confesses.

“Look out the window. Nobody does,” Ray replies.

Is the tight lid “True Detective” is keeping on plot details a precursor of some major drama? Fans will have to wait to find out. “True Detective” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. EDT on HBO.
