  • Anthony Hopkins beat Chadwick Boseman for the best actor award at the 2021 Oscars Sunday
  • A number of Oscars viewers and Twitter users slammed the outcome, saying Boseman was "robbed"
  • Others said Hopkins also deserved the victory for his incredible performance in "The Father"

Chadwick Boseman didn't receive a posthumous award at the 2021 Oscars on Sunday night, leaving many viewers and fans shocked and disappointed.

Boseman has won several posthumous awards for his performance as Levee in "Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom," including a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award and Critics Choice Award. But while fans had been expecting the "Black Panther" star to also take home the trophy for best actor at this year's Oscars, the award went to Anthony Hopkins instead for his role in "The Father."

USA Today noted that the announcement of this year's best actor had been moved to the end of the Academy Awards ceremony, where best picture is usually awarded, appearing to "indicate that Boseman had also earned an Oscar."

Viewers immediately took to Twitter to call out the outcome.

One person tweeted, "Every single indication felt like they moved around the categories so that Chadwick Boseman would win best actor at the very end of the show. And then Anthony Hopkins wins, doesn’t give a speech, and they roll credits. This is MAXIMUM chaotic energy."

"This year's Oscars is making me re-evaluate my choice to become a film critic. Chadwick Boseman was posthumously robbed, like wtf," wrote another.

Comedian @CyrusMMcQueen tweeted, "A dying man gives the performance of a lifetime... The last performance of his lifetime... Leaves it all up there... and you don’t give him the trophy?!"

"I know #TheAcademy didn’t appreciate Chadwick Boseman’s talent throughout his life. Didn’t expect them to be so bold after the fact," a fourth Twitter user said.

"The Oscars love to fill the show with awarding ethnic winners FOR OUR VIEWS then give the most important awards to the same old white people from the movies nobody saw. I’m done with the #Oscars Andra Day and Chadwick Boseman robbed," another wrote.

However, others defended Hopkins' victory, saying he also deserved the recognition.

"I know many will be disappointed Chadwick Boseman did not win at #Oscars, but Anthony Hopkins is truly astonishing in #TheFather. All 5 performances in that category worth watching," Susan Stumme tweeted.

"A little sad Chadwick Boseman didn’t win Best Actor but I know Anthony Hopkins deserved his win #Oscar," a second user added.

"Hopkins gave the best performance hands down," a third user wrote.

"They were both brilliant. Both deserved to win, but only one could. It's no disrespect to Boseman," a fourth user added.

"His performance was incredible, I thought Boseman would get it because he’s won all the others... but Hopkins was just better period," a fifth user wrote.

Boseman passed away at age 43 in August 2020 after a lengthy battle with colon cancer.
