California residents claim they saw strange lights in the sky on New Year’s morning.

While federal authorities say there has been no “unusual flight activity” in the area, those who witnessed the unidentified lights say they were not mistaken about what they saw, KXTV reports.

"I seen like six bright orange colored lights, Kaye Pinlac, from Stockton, Calif., said. "And they were almost like in a diamond or triangle shape. It was weird. And so they started just separating."

The lights were spotted by residents from Placer County to the Hollywood Hills. Each witness had a different way of describing what they saw.

"Whatever it was moved up and to the left," Steven Brown of Sacramento told News10, adding that the object made no sound. "It hovered there for probably about 60 seconds, then it took off at a high rate of speed."

“No sound, no blinking lights, just this big illuminated form,” Terry Mauth of Auburn said about the egg-shaped object he saw.

Pinlac captured the moment on his iPhone. The video shows a small flickering light at what appears to be at a high altitude in the night sky. Throughout the video the small light hovers and changes colors.

“Too high for a helicopter isn’t it?” a voice in the video says. “I know. I don’t know what that is, dude,” another answers.

The incident is reminiscent of a 2008 UFO sighting in the Sacramento Valley that turned out to be an airplane with an electric sign under its wings.

The most recent sightings come days after a mysterious crop circle appeared in Salinas, Calif. While the pattern has since been mowed down after attracting large crowds, the design appeared to involve Braille or Morse code, the Monterey Herald reports.

"I looks very mechanical," Crop circle researcher Nancy Talbott of the BLT Research Team in Cambridge, Mass., said. "It doesn't look the way most of the genuine circles I've worked on look. That doesn't mean I'm right."
