A 33-year-old Alabama man was left on the brink of death after he was mauled by a pack of vicious dogs.

The incident took place early Tuesday when the man was walking down a road outside his family home in Chunchula, CBS-affiliated WKRG reported.

Eric Roney was ambushed by at least five dogs and suffered hundreds of puncture wounds, his family told Fox10 News, and added the doctors who treated him said his chances of survival were less.

“5 minutes more on that road, if it hadn’t been for Donald, he would have died right there on that road,” Roney's grandfather, Myland Johnson said, adding when his son heard the commotion, he thought the dogs nearby had cornered a black bear, Fox10 News reported. "Bout 2:00 in the morning he heard the dogs barking and raising cane. And as he got down there, almost to him, he could see Eric laying on the ground in a fetal position and the dogs just eating on him."

Johnson said at least five dogs -- believed to be hound mixes -- were on top of Roney, mauling him and there wasn't "a place on his body that’s not eaten."

Roney's family said doctors had to give him seven units of blood following the attack. They added the victim would need multiple surgeries, including reconstructive surgery on his face and ears. However, these procedures would take time as his condition is not stable.

Authorities investigating the case said the dogs came from a home less than a mile away from where Roney lives. Animal Control went to the home and found seven dogs on the property, WKRG reported.

All seven dogs have been taken away and are set to be euthanized. They are also being tested for rabies, authorities said.

Mobile County Sheriff’s Office told WKRG if the victim dies of the injuries, then the case would be taken over from animal control, as it would be considered a criminal act.
