  • He remained unbeaten on 73 during India's chase of 165

Indian captain Virat Kohli scripted yet another history in cricket when his side took on England in the second Twenty20 International (T20I) in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

Kohli became the first-ever male cricketer to complete 3,000 runs in T20Is. Overall, he was the third cricketer to the milestone after New Zealand batter Suzie Bates and West Indies' Stefanie Taylor. While Suzie has scored 3,301 runs in 119 T20I innings at an average of 30 for the White Ferns, Stefanie has scored 3,062 runs in 106 innings at an average of 36.02 for the Caribbean side.

The Indian skipper was 72 runs away from the landmark prior to Sunday's game. Kohli went on to remain unbeaten on 73 as he helped India successfully chase down England's target of 165. With the win in the second T20I, the five-match series is now leveled at 1-1. En route his 49-ball 73, Kohli hit three sixes and five fours.

Having made his T20I debut in 2010, Kohli has accumulated 3,001 runs in 81 innings at an excellent average of 50.86 for Team India. Kohli has recorded a total of 70 centuries in international cricket. However, he is yet to score a hundred in the T20Is.

After being put to bat Sunday, England managed to score 164 for 6 in 20 overs. Opening batsman Jason Roy top-scored for the visiting side with 46 off 35 balls. In reply, India had a terrible start as they lost KL Rahul on the final delivery of their first over. At 1 for 1, Kohli walked in to join debutant Ishan Kishan at the crease. The two put up 94 runs for the second wicket, bringing India's chase back on track.

On his international debut, Kishan played a Man of the Match knock as he quick-fired 56 off just 32 balls. It was a memorable start to his journey as he helped India comfortably win by seven wickets.

After India's win Sunday, Kohli hailed the 22-year-old Kishan, saying the Mumbai Indians (MI) batsman is a very calculated player.

"We ticked all the boxes we wanted to and to give away only 34 in the last five overs is a very special effort. A special mention to Ishan the way he batted. I tried to do what I can but he kept following his instincts and it was a quality innings on debut. When you play in the IPL with such dominance as he has and he is a fearless character and he knew that he was hitting the ball well and he is very calculated and not restless," said Kohli in a post-match interview.
