A man in Australia has been charged with destroying protected wildlife after a vicious video of him killing a kangaroo had gone viral on Chinese social media. The man was taken into custody Wednesday, but is out on bail.

The video shows a man, 43, approach what appears to be an injured kangaroo and slash at its throat multiple time with a knife until it dies, all while speaking to the kangaroo in Chinese.

“Just face it, that's your fate, let me finish this as early as I can,” the man said, according to the Australian Broadcast Corporation (ABC).

The video got widespread traction on Chinese instant messaging service QQ.

The incident appears to have happened in New South Wales, according to the BBC.

The man was arrested Ringwood, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Victoria's Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) reported that the man was arrested Wednesday. Firearms, knives and cell phones were seized from the man’s property during the arrest.

“The wildlife offenses captured in this video are particularly abhorrent,” Glenn Sharp a manager with DELWP told ABC. "Unfortunately sometimes videos get played and played by that many people for the wrong reasons, but hopefully this one can have the right message come out of it.”

Sharp hopes the video can become a warning.

“If we can reach back to that same number of people with the message of a person has been arrested, a person is facing charges and this is illegal to do, then that would be even better,” said Sharp.

The man faces between six month and five years in jail. The sentence becomes much heavier if in addition to being found guilty he is proven to have malicious intent, according to the BBC.
