Day one of the annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show got underway Monday, and the after the furry contestants were judged on a number of criteria, including breed, obedience, showmanship and agility, the winners were ultimately named.

This year marks the 140th installment of the famed canine competition, which has been held in New York City for all of the contest's existence, repeated crowning the top performing dogs participating in various categories of competition.

Seven dog breeds not previously included in years past were added to this year's competition for the best in show category, making the new additions the largest number tacked on to the field in more than 15 years, according to the Associated Press.

More than 3,000 dogs from around the U.S. were expected to participate 139 years after the very first Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show was held in 1877.

There are four groups in which dogs were competing Monday include Hound dogs, Toy dogs, Non-sporting dogs and herding dogs.

Hound group winner: Borzoi, Belisarius JP My Sassy Girl (full information here).

Hound Group runners-up (in order): Whippet, Saluki, Beagle

Toy Group Winner: Shih Tzu, GCH Wenrick's Don't Stop Believing (full information here).

Toy Group runners-up (in order): Pekingese, Pomeranian, Italian Greyhound

Non-Sporting Group winner: Bulldog, GCH Imperious Hamitup Southern Bell (full information here).

Non-Sporting Group runners-up (in order): Dalmatian, Poodle (Standard), Boston Terrier

Herding Group winner: German Shepherd Dog, GCH Lockenhaus' Rumor Has It V Kenlyn (full information here).

Herding Group runners-up (in order): Australian Shepherd, Border Collie, Puli
