Twitter went crazy Friday after One Direction star Harry Styles chopped off his luscious locks. The British singer took to Instagram to share the news.

Styles had only one word for his followers: “whoops.” Then he showed a picture of his brown curly hair. He managed to give a thumbs-up sign while holding the braid. The photo instantly went viral, garnering more than 500,000 likes from his 17 million followers after being on the social media site for less than an hour.

The term #RIPHarrysHair soared on Twitter. At the this writing, it had more than 134,000 tweets.

For international superstar Styles, his hair is his claim to fame. Taylor Swift apparently sang about his ’do in her song “Style.” She sings, “"You got that long hair, slicked back, white T-shirt."

Sometimes Styles would let his strands run wild, other times he’d wear it in a man bun, and sometimes he would tame the craziness by sporting a headband.

Styles, 22, has been teasing fans about cutting his hair since December. The first time was during a stint on “The Late Late Show with James Corden.” He told the TV talk show host he would continue to grow his hair until it was nine inches long; this way he could donate it to the Little Princess Trust charity, which provides real hair wigs for young girls who lost their hair from cancer treatment.

Unfortunately, fans won’t get to see what Styles looks like just yet. His hair stylist has not posted a picture of the singer, and Styles only shared a picture of his hair separated from his head.
