The Syrian civil war that has helped fuel a global refugee crisis took a turn Tuesday after government troops claimed the city of Aleppo following months of violence. Syrian President Bashar Assad's victory comes amid a climbing death toll that sent refugees fleeing to Europe and throughout the Middle East since the war began during the 2011 Arab uprisings.

"The crushing of Aleppo, the immeasurably terrifying toll on its people, the bloodshed, the wanton slaughter of men, women and children, the destruction – and we are nowhere near the end of this cruel conflict," U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein said in a statement.

With global leaders closely watching what happens next in Syria, here are nine facts about what life is like for refugees around the world.

1. Roughly 65.3 million people around the world have been forced from their homes, an unprecedented figure. That includes nearly 21.3 million refugees.

2. More than half of all refugees are children, according to the United Nations.

3. Nearly 34,000 people are forced from their homes every day because of conflict or persecution.

5. The Syrian civil war forced more than 10 million people from their homes.

6. The Zaatari Refugee Camp houses nearly 80,000 Syrians and has become the fourth-largest city in Jordan. The camp has scarce food, healthcare resources and educational opportunities.

7. Germany is expected to place some 410,000 refugees in jobs by 2018, a study released Thursday from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy found.

8. Just 10 countries host more than half the world's refugees and there are all in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia.

9. Wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, south-east Turkey, Yemen, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and north-east Nigeria have also contributed to the refugee crisis.
