2016 wasn’t just a great year for movies, it will also a good year for illegal downloads.

According to TorrentFreak, the most pirated movie of last year was none other than “Deadpool.” The R-rated superhero film, which stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular character, was most often downloaded. Illegal copies of the X-Men action flick started circulating early February.

A sequel to “Deadpool” is currently in its pre-production phase. “Deadpool 2” will be directed by “John Wick” director David Leitch. It is scheduled to release on March 2, 2018.

The list of the most pirated movies in 2016 is mostly made up of superhero films. The second and third most illegally downloaded flicks are, not surprisingly, “Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice” and “Captain America: Civil War” respectively. The fourth and fifth most pirated films were “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “X-Men: Apocalypse.”

Usually, films that do well at the box office also tend to be the most illegally downloaded movies. However, surprisingly, the top ten list of most pirated movies in 2016 also includes “Warcraft” and “Independence Day: Resurgence.” Worldwide, “Warcraft” raked in only $433 million while “Independence Day: Resurgence” managed to make $387 million. Both performed less than average at both the domestic and international box office.

Rounding up the top ten most illegally copied movies are “Suicide Squad” and animated flick “Finding Dory.”

Here is the complete list of the most pirated movies in 2016:

  1. Deadpool
  2. Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice
  3. Captain America: Civil War
  4. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
  5. X-Men: Apocalypse
  6. Warcraft
  7. Independence Day: Resurgence
  8. Suicide Squad
  9. Finding Dory
  10. The Revenant

Of course, “The Revenant” released in late 2015, but it still makes the list of the most illegally downloaded movies in 2016.
