The NBA has officially begun an investigation into Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver, following a report that he has a history of racist and misogynistic comments and incidents during the 17 years he has managed the franchise. Sarver has persistently refuted the allegations made in an ESPN story published on Thursday.

The report describes various cases in which Sarver reportedly used racially insulting language with and about Black players, coaches and other staff. Allegations of sexist behavior were also involved.

Soon after the report was published, NBA Executive Vice President of Communications Mike Bass asserted that its contents were “extremely serious,” stating that, “The NBA and WNBA remain committed to providing a respectful and inclusive workplace for all employees. Once the investigation is completed, its findings will provide the basis for any league action."

Various anonymous staff members told ESPN that Sarver continually used racist language in discussions. However, there have been a few colleagues of Sarver that have come forward to defend him.

“From a personal perspective, the Robert Sarver I’ve worked alongside of for 15 years is not a racist and he’s not sexist,” said Jason Rowley, president and CEO of the Suns.

“I would entirely welcome an impartial NBA investigation which may prove our only outlet for clearing my name and the reputation of which I’m so very proud,” Sarver said in a statement issued through the Suns on Thursday.
