Windows 8.1, an update to Windows 8 that is also known as Windows Blue, is expected to be available as a free update later this year.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by Windows chief financial officer Tami Reller at JP Morgan's Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference in Boston. A preview of Windows 8.1 will be available in late June during Microsoft's Build conference.
