A Kansas woman is on murder trial for beheading her ex-boyfriend’s mother after she asked the victim to come over and pick up her son’s stuff from her house.

Rachael Hilyard, from Wichita, Kansas, is charged with first-degree murder, after she killed 63-year-old Micki Davis in April 2017. Davis had gone to Hilyard’s house to pick up her son’s belongings when she was attacked and killed. Her decapitated body was discovered in Hilyard’s garage, while her head was found in the kitchen sink, ABC News reported.

Davis’ 9-year-old grandson had accompanied her to Hilyard’s house. According to authorities, he ran away when his grandmother was attacked and alerted the police using her cellphone. He didn’t witness his grandmother being killed.

The trial for Hilyard began Tuesday. Her attorney Quentin Pittman did not deny that she killed Davis, but said that the jury would find her guilty of the “appropriate charge” in his opening statement. According to reports, he did not clarify what these charges would be.

The prosecutors on their side were set to introduce evidence against Hilyard, which included testimonies from the police officers who had discovered Davis’ body, a taped interview of Davis’ grandson with law enforcement officers and photos of the crime scene.

In an interview with The Eagle, not long after she was arrested, Hilyard said that it was God who was responsible for the murder of Davis. According to her, an exorcism was carried out at her place to ward off the evil spirits, days before Davis turned up at her house.

Though Hilyard was receiving treatment at the state psychiatric hospital from the time of her arrest, she was declared competed for trial in August last year.

She currently remains in custody at the Sedgewick county jail and her trial is expected to last the whole week.
