Having suicidal thoughts can affect any person irrespective of their age. There can be many contributing factors that can lead to death by suicide. Some key contributors may include a history of abuse, health concerns and mental disorder.

The overall suicide statistics in the U.S. point to mental health as the leading cause behind suicide. As per the estimates of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), at least 45,979 Americans died by suicide in 2020.

There is enough proof that mental health disorders can be a catalyst for suicidal thoughts. Unfortunately, the stigma around seeking help for mental health concerns has also worsened the situation.

World Suicide Prevention Day is observed on Sept. 10 with the aim to raise awareness about mental health, reduce stigma and bring global institutions together with a common message that suicide can be prevented.

World Suicide Prevention Day was established by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) in 2003 and endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) to spread the message across diverse communities and reduce instances of suicide globally.

Like last year, World Suicide Prevention Day 2022 is being observed under the triennial theme of "Creating hope through action." It aims to prioritize mental health as a paramount self-care activity while setting aside concerning thoughts of suicide.

To mark the global campaign, here are some uplifting quotes that will help restore one's faith in life:

  • "I believe we are here on the planet Earth to live, grow up and do what we can to make this world a better place for all people to enjoy freedom." – Rosa Parks
  • "Life is either a great adventure or nothing." – Helen Keller
  • "You are the sum total of everything you've ever seen, heard, eaten, smelled, been told, forgot - it's all there. Everything influences each of us, and because of that I try to make sure that my experiences are positive." - Maya Angelou
  • "All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence; then success is sure."- Mark Twain
  • "Love yourself first and everything else falls into place."- Lucille Ball
  • "If you can dream it, you can do it." — Walt Disney
