  • Brock Lesnar twisted the script by convincing Sami Zayn to face Roman Reigns at WWE SmackDown for the Universal title
  • WWE Day 1 will see a much-awaited clash between Reigns and Lesnar for the Universal title
  • Zayn could still enter the picture and make the Reigns vs. Lesnar duel into a Triple Threat affair

Brock Lesnar returned on Friday night's episode of WWE SmackDown with his sights set on Universal Champion Roman Reigns.

During the episode, Sami Zayn interrupted Lesnar as he was challenging Reigns for the Universal Championship to say that he was a big fan of the “Beast Incarnate,” something that Lesnar did not appreciate, WWE.com reported.

After Lesnar demanded to know who Zayn thought he was with his disruption, the latter explained he was the no. 1 contender for Reigns' Universal title after winning the Black Friday Battle Royal last week.

However, Lesnar managed to convince Zayn to challenge Reigns later on in the show, with Lesnar assuring him that he would be by his side.

Aware of the odds, Zayn agreed. But little did he know that it was all part of a master plan by Lesnar to wriggle his way into the Jan. 1 WWE event, WWE Day 1.

Before the main event started, Zayn promised Lesnar that he would win against Reigns and defend the Universal title against Lesnar at WWE Day 1.

But Lesnar did not even let the 37-year-old Canadian finish his piece before hitting him with his patented Suplex City finisher as well as two punishing F5s.

After battering him, Lesnar picked up Zayn and tossed him into the ring for Reigns’ taking. The WWE Universal champion hardly worked up a sweat as he easily finished off Zayn with a spear and then a Guillotine for the victory.

With the development, Reigns will now defend his WWE title against Lesnar on WWE Day 1 on New Year's Day.

A look at the matches set for that WWE event shows three matches with titles on the line.

In addition to the Reigns vs. Lesnar WWE Universal title clash, WWE champion Big E will also defend his title against Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens in a Triple Threat match.

The only other WWE card so far for Day 1 pits WWE tag team champions The Usos against The New Day.

Worth noting here is that even though Zayn got decimated, there are still several weeks to go before WWE Day 1. It is possible that the Canadian could be inserted to make the WWE Universal title joust a Triple-Threat affair as well.

If that is the case, the odds may not be in Lesnar's favor, with Zayn expected to want payback for the WWE SmackDown attack. One scenario could see him aligning with Reigns before he turns his attention solely on the Tribal Chief.
