KEY POINTS

  • Bobby Lashley failed to live up to expectations in his WWE return
  • Brock Lesnar failed to win the Royal Rumble last month after being eliminated by Drew McIntyre
  • Two of them were being paired to face each other during their MMA tenure

There were speculations that there will be a match being planned between two WWE stars who moved to the mixed martial arts scene but none of it came to reality. This time, WWE will take advantage of that idea but not inside the octagon.

Reports have surfaced that former ECW champion Bobby Lashley is being built up to be the opponent of the current WWE Champion Brock Lesnar. Both coming from successful MMA careers after their departure with the promotion, the two of them are now set to face each other in the pro wrestling ring.

Per SportsKeeda, Lashley’s return to the WWE was made to add fanfare to the program given that he’s coming off a dominant MMA stint. However, the audience’s expectations were not as they were looking at Lashley as a future main event caliber wrestler but he is currently far from that.

“The feud they went back to, was, of course, the one with Lashley. It keeps Lashley looking strong, which, obviously, the intention here is to start building him up for a match against Brock Lesnar soon, so they need to build him and build him,” Sportskeeda’s Tom Colohue said. “ This has done a really good job of that.”

He is involved in a storyline where he is in a romantic relationship with Lana and an ongoing battle with Rusev and with the “Bulgarian Brute” on the weaker side of things between the three of them, the story is still in favor of Lashley as he is being perceived as the stronger guy. Being viewed as one of the top superstars could give justice to him the impression as a worthy opponent for the “Beast Incarnate”.

Lesnar, on the other hand, has become a dominant WWE champion since winning the title against Kofi Kingston in October 2019. He announced that he will be joining Royal Rumble as the first entrant but he was not able to win it all as he was eliminated by eventual winner Drew McIntyre.

Both of them are holding strong wrestling and MMA credentials. Lashley fought in various MMA promotions and holds a compiled 15-2 win-loss card and has fought his last five fights with Bellator. Lesnar fought eight times with the UFC and won the heavyweight title once but his last three fights were not how he wanted it to turn out - two losses, one no-contest after testing positive on clomiphene, an estrogen blocker.

The match-up would look great in an MMA ring but it’s just as equally interesting in a WWE ring.
