Zelenskyy Predicts a Russian Draft Is Coming. He Says Moscow Will Mobilize Hundreds Of Thousands Of Troops.

Ukraine fears Russia will attempt to mobilize as many as 300,000 more troops later this year.

CNN reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday Moscow had suffered massive casualties this year and will now use mobilization to replace killed and wounded Russian soldiers.

"Russia has lost 267,000 personnel since the start of the year, including around 155,000 killed to date," Zelensky claimed.

Russia has avoided having a draft to replenish its forces, instead focusing on incentives and contracts to get people to volunteer. However, Zelensky said that he believes a draft would happen after Russian parliamentary elections next month.

"We are confident that following the elections, they will carry out a mobilization. We believe this will not take place in the major cities," Zelensky said according to CNN. Later he added, "They'll lose all 300,000 of these newly mobilized Russians there; we'll wipe them out."

Zelensky's comments came as he faces significant domestic political challenges. Zelensky has recently fired two top aides who were once considered close allies and has faced calls for Ukraine to hold elections.

Technically, Zelensky's term ended in 2024, however, the Ukrainian Constitution does not allow for elections while the nation is under martial law related to the ongoing war.

However, former Ukrainian defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov called for elections this week in a video, saying that "democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia."

Zelensky had fired Fedorov over disagreements about how to conduct the war. Zelensky also rejected Fedorov's call for elections, saying it would be too destructive to Ukraine to do so at this time, TIME reported.

"I believe that in a war like this, elections as such are a huge risk," Zelensky said, according to TIME. "Elections right now are a tsunami for the country that will split Ukraine."

Zelensky added that "I believe that if we want to destroy the country, then during such a war we can move towards elections."

Also this week, Zelensky fired another senior aid amid an ongoing corruption scandal. Iryna Mudra, a presidential deputy chief of staff, was fired this week after her home was searched in connection with an ongoing corruption and money laundering investigation, The Guardian reported.
