Social Media Day is celebrated on June 30, and it recognizes the positive effects of social media on our society.

The special day was launched by Mashable in 2010 with the use of the hashtag #SMDay, according to National Today.

Whether it be meeting new people or reconnecting with loved ones, social media platforms have been a great avenue to bring people closer together.

1. Zuckerberg's first concept was a site called "Facemash."
Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, originally had a plan of setting up a site called "Facemash" where people could compare photos of two people and decide who's hotter. Needless to say, it did not pass the test.

2. The average number of followers on Instagram is 150.
Although most business accounts on Instagram reach a thousand followers and above, statistics say that the average number of followers most personal accounts have is around 150.

3. People are most active on Facebook at 8 a.m. and 10 p.m.
The best time to post and get engagements on Facebook would be some time around 8 a.m. and 10 p.m., as these are the hours when people are most active.

4. The number one most shared food on Instagram is pizza.
Followed closely by steak and sushi, pizza is the number one food shared on Instagram.

5. The average time people spend on Facebook is 58 minutes.
People spend about 58 minutes on Facebook daily and spend an average of just 1.7 seconds for each post, which means marketers only have a literal second to make sure their advertisements catch a user's attention.

6. About 50-60% of a user's followers will see their posts.
People looking to interact with other users need only post photos and videos on Instagram to increase engagement with their followers.

7. Facebook is huge.

According to Business Insider, Facebook is bigger than LinkedIn, Yahoo, Netflix, eBay, Groupon, IAC, AOL and Zynga combined.
