The “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 4 finale is going to get violent. After experiencing heartbreak, Aida/Ophelia wants everyone on the ABC drama to feel pain. She’s on a rampage that could bring about the apocalypse. Luckily, a friend returned just in time to help the team take on the newly human Life Model Decoy.

“With the surprising emergence of Ghost Rider, Coulson and the team attempt to stop Aida from ending the world,” the finale synopsis teases. Fans already saw Robbie Reyes (Gabriel Luna) return at the end of episode 21, so that isn’t too surprising. The real twist isn’t mentioned in the synopsis for the “S.H.I.E.L.D.” finale. They’re going back into the Framework.

Yo-Yo (Natalia Cordova-Buckley) was in despair when she learned that Mack (Henry Simmons) didn’t leave the Framework with her other friends. Daisy (Chloe Bennet) explained that Mack doesn’t remember his loved ones in the real world. He only remembers Hope (Jordan Rivera), his young daughter. She feels real to him, so he can’t leave her behind.

Yo-Yo decided to hop into the Framework with no preparation. She woke up in an abandoned room, strapped to some sort of medical table. It looks like Hydra may have been experimenting on the inhuman. She’ll have to find a way to get out, find Mack and convince him to leave this world behind. Will she be able to do all of that before the finale is over, though?

Out in the real world, Aida (Mallory Jansen) has teamed up with Ivanov (Zach McGowan) to wreak more havoc. They’re going to use the Darkhold to end the world, but one person might know how to fight that power. Ghost Rider just escaped many months trapped in another dimension because of the Darkhold, so he might be more prepared than anyone else to take on Aida. Still, expect the whole team to be needed to fight the former robot.

The “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” finale is sure to have an epic battle, but don’t expect the season to tie up every loose end. Executive producer Jed Whedon teased that there isn’t much closure in the last episode. “No, we were told to write a season finale, so we wrote a season finale, not a series finale,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

That’s a bit of a risk. As previously reported, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is considered an “on the bubble” show. It’s not guaranteed for renewal, but it isn’t a lock to be canceled either. Currently, it’s only averaging about 2.4 million viewers per week.

If it is canceled, fans are sure to be upset with the cliffhanger. However, it seems like renewal might be imminent. Both Deadline and EW have reported sources claiming that the show will be renewed for Season 5. If true, it would be the first show in several years to survive more than a season in the network’s 10 p.m. timeslot on Tuesdays.

The “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 4 finale airs Tuesday at 10 p.m. EDT on ABC.
