UPDATE: May 10 — The CW has renewed “The Originals” for Season 5 and “iZombie” for Season 4.

UPDATE: May 5 — “Emerald City” has been canceled by NBC.

May is an important time for TV shows. Not only are many shows wrapping up for the season, but some programs will be canceled. This year, there are several shows that could be on the chopping block. The shows below have not had their fates revealed yet, but cancellation news could be on the way this month.

“The Originals” — The shortened season was the first clue that this could be the end for the Michaelsons. After flagship show “The Vampire Diaries” ended, ratings for “The Originals” have stayed pretty steady, despite the extended break between Seasons 3 and 4. Unfortunately, with under a million viewers tuning in every week, the ratings aren’t impressive. The CW stated in 2015 that “The Originals” triples in viewers once DVR, digital and video on demand numbers are figured in. If they’re still doing the same, those numbers could affect the network’s decision on whether to renew or cancel.

“Powerless” — The first comedy from DC Comics has been pulled from the schedule, which is a pretty clear indicator that the show is in bad shape. With an average 2.29 million viewers tuning in, it’s the lowest rated show on NBC. Executive producer Patrick Schumacker told a fan who asked him to fight for “Powerless” to get renewed that it was an “uphill battle” at this point.

“Quantico” — On average, 2.2 million viewers are tuning into “Quantico” each week. “Conviction” was canceled earlier this season in the same timeslot with 3.5 million tuning in. While the numbers aren’t that impressive for ABC, the show actually gets a huge boost after DVR ratings are factored in, often more than doubling its live audience. With Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra leading the spy drama, international sales also might affect the fate of Season 3.

“Emerald City” — If the Friday timeslot wasn’t a giveaway, then the ratings should’ve been a clear indicator. The “Wizard of Oz” meets “Game of Thrones” saga was a long and expensive shoot for such a small audience. For the series premiere, 4.4 million tuned in, but it steadily lost viewers almost every week. The finale only pulled in 2.8 million viewers. That’s probably not enough to justify a second season for NBC’s big-budget drama.

“iZombie” — Fans of Rob Thomas, who also created the canceled-too-soon “Veronica Mars,” know this feeling well. Critics enjoy the show, but “iZombie” doesn’t have a huge audience with over 800,000 people tuning in on average in Season 3. It also doesn’t have the awards show love that “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” which has even lower ratings, has received. It’s one of the only shows on The CW that hasn’t had its fate revealed, so its renewal chances are not looking good.

“New Girl” — Even actor Jake Johnson says that the show has a “50/50” chance of coming back to Fox for Season 7. While the remaining fan base is dedicated, the 2 million tuning into Season 6 is a much small group than the 4.3 million who watched Season 3.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” — The sci-fi drama is always on the bubble, and that does not change in 2017. The original Marvel TV show lost about a million viewers when it moved to the 10 p.m. Tuesday timeslot this season. While the hope of syndication deals may have saved it in the past, it hits the magical 88-episode threshold this year (syndication deals used to become very profitable after 100, but it’s been lowered in recent years). However, Marvel — also owned by ABC’s parent company Disney — is an internationally known brand. The show’s overseas ratings may come into play when ABC decides whether to cancel or renew.

If “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is renewed for Season 5, it would be the first show in several years to survive in the 10 p.m. slot on Tuesdays, often known as the “death slot” for the alphabet network.

Decisions about most of these shows should be revealed in May. At Upfronts, networks typically reveal which shows have been renewed and canceled.
