Beats is returning to the classroom with Apple Inc.’s annual back to school promotion. Starting Thursday, higher education students, parents of students and education employees can receive a free pair of Beats Solo2 on-ear headphones with the purchase of an eligible Mac.

That includes the iMac, MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and Mac Pro. The Mac mini and refurbished Macs, iPhones and iPads are not included. By purchasing a qualifying Mac, a buyer will be instantly credited $199.95 towards Beats Solo2 headphones in black, white, red, blue, gray and pink colors. Alternatively, education customers can opt for the wireless version of the space gray, silver or gold Beats Solo2 headphones for $100, after the credit is applied.

By comparison. last year’s promotion offered a $100 Apple Store gift card with the purchase of a Mac, as well as a $50 gift card with the purchase of an iPhone or iPad.

Apple’s promotion traditionally has launched between June and early July. But this year, it started later than expected, briefly prompting speculation on whether or not it would return, according to three month trial subscription. In addition to the back to school promotion, Apple also offers some discounts for its Macs ranging from $50 to $200.

For now, the deal is only available through U.S. Apple retail stores and Apple authorized campus stores. On Aug. 6, it will expand to its online store. The promo deal at all U.S. locations will end on Sept. 18.

In addition to Macs, Apple is working on revamping its iPad for education program to make it easier for schools looking to deploy the tablet in the classroom, according to MacRumors.
