The army is firing heavy machine guns in the streets of Alexandria, Egypt, reported CNN on TV.

Via Twitter, some are saying CNN reported the army is driving through the streets of Alexandria and firing while helicopters hover over protesters.

It is unclear if they’re firing at protesters or some other target.

If the army is actually firing at protesters, it would be a huge development.

Previously, the army did not harm protesters. Instead, they maintained an uneasy truce with them. Some members of the military even fraternized with protesters.

The inability of Egyptian President Mubarak to count on the army to disperse protesters was a major reason analysts thought his regime may topple. However, if the army is now willing to use force on protesters, the whole dynamic of Egypt's situation may have changed.
