Online travel information firm TripAdvisor announced Monday that it has bought Where I've Been, a travel website and social media company based out of Chicago, for an undisclosed sum.

Where I've Been allows users to map out where they have been, lived, and want to go on Facebook using an interactive map. The company said that about 10 million people have used their Facebook application to create color coded travel maps, using virtual pushpins to mark destinations.

The company was founded by Michael Dalesandro who attended Loyola University.

No financial terms of the acquisition were disclosed, but TripAdvisor stated in a news release that Where I've Been's entire product staff will join the TripAdvisor team.

Back in February, TripAdvisor acquired EveryTrail, which makes a GPS-enabled platform that can be used to create outdoor tours and city guides for mobile devices. TripAdvisor, which currently boasts its place as the world's largest travel site, plans to spin off from owner Expedia in the third quarter of this year, becoming its own private company.
