Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, the First Lady of France, has given birth to a baby girl, French newspaper Le Figaro reports.

The 43-year-old was joined by her husband French President Nicolas Sarkozy in the delivery room on Wednesday night. The President stayed for half an hour after the birth before jetting away for state affairs.

The presidential couple had checked into the Paris maternity clinic, Clinique de la Muette, earlier in the day.

President Sarkozy, 56, has three sons from previous marriages while Bruni-Sarkozy has a 10-year-old son from a previous relationship.

Since their early clinic check in, speculation and excitement surrounding the new baby girl has been growing among the French media and beyond.

On Twitter, the latest name rumored to be given to the new baby was Dahlia, according to the Telegraph.

The new Sarkozy baby, whose name has yet to be released, is the first to be born to a French presidential couple in office in since the days of Napoleon.

Despite interest from media and the French public, don't expect pictures of the new baby to be released by the Sarkozys anytime soon.

In September, Bruni-Sarkozy told French program Sept A Huit her plans to keep her private life, private.

I understand the media interest, and I don't see any inconvenient in it for myself or my husband, but when it concerns the children, it's not impossible, she said in French.

I will do everything to protect this infant, and I'll be absolutely rigorous. I will never show photos of this child. I will never expose this child, Bruni-Sarkozy added.

The new baby girl is the first child for the presidential couple.

No official announcement from the Elysee Palace has been released.
