The 2012 Screen Actors Guild Awards took place Sunday night, as stars flocked to the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles to celebrate, well, each other. The SAG Awards are the only industry honors to focus solely on performance. The winners are chosen by their fellow actors.

Sunday night held some surprise winners. The Help scored some of the biggest nods including Outstanding Performance by a Cast and Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role, which went to Viola Davis. The SAG Awards has sometimes been used as a barometer for the Oscars. If that is so, where does that leave slated-favorite, The Artist?

In the television categories things went far more as planned. Modern Family (Outstanding Cast in a Comedy) and Boardwalk Empire (Outstanding Cast in a Drama and a Lead Actor win for Steve Buscemi) were two heavy hitters who came out on top.

Hollywood titans sashayed down the red carpet. Starlets looked marvelous in a myriad of designer duds. Some popular trends of the night included shades of crimson – from deep red, to plum, to fuchsia – and ashy hues – creams, heather grays and dusty blues splattered with shimmer. Black made a comeback in the a big way, with actresses like Angelina Jolie, Amber Heard and Stacy Keibler going for dark and dramatic.

Marchesa was the chosen label of the night. “Modern Family” stunner Sofia Vergara took some breaths away in a silken fuchsia strapless gown with architectural bodice and subtle draping.

The sultry 39-year-old actress even dished on rumors that she went commando to the Golden Globes. I never said I wasn't wearing panties. I always wear panties. They were really tiny, like a G-string thing, that they're almost no panty but they're a panty,” she said, laughing.

Viola Davis opted for Marchesa as well. “The Help” actress looked stunning in a white Grecian-styled strapless gown with golden embroidery on the bodice.

Working the ashy hues, Lea Michele went with a pale gray Versace gown for the night. The fitted bodice was complimented by a flowing tulle skirt with thigh-high split. Michele, whose hit series “Glee” was nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, was excited for the night. “In the car in my way to the #SAGawards2012!! With my very handsome date Mr. Jonathan Groff:)” she tweeted before arriving.

Other starlets made bold fashion choices. Emma stone chose a Alexander McQueen Pre-Fall 2012 – a black frock with exploding lace bustier. Emily Blunt went with an acid green Oscar de la Renta gown (which got the seal of approval from husband John Krasinski). Kaley Cuoco went with a powder blue Romana Keveza gown complemented with a milkmaid braid. Though some criticized Cuoco’s choice, E! correspondent Kelly Osbourne said that she commended Cuoco’s brave choice, saying that she either “love[s] it, or is obsessed with it.”
