A non-profit organization, the Invisible Children, started a movement to take down Ugandan guerilla group leader Joseph Kony and have him arrested for crimes against humanity.

Kony is the head of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), a group that is fighting to set up a theocratic government in Uganda.

The LRA, under the leadership of Kony, is known for its violent actions against the people of countries like northern Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan and Sudan.

The LRA group has abducted and forced around 66,000 children to fight with them. The group also forced the internal displacement of more than 2,000,000 people since its revolt began in 1986 in Uganda.

As a result, Kony was charged for war crimes by the International Criminal Court at The Hague in 2005, but he succeeded in escaping. Kony is guilty of innumerable crimes he has committed involving children.

For years, violence has raged in Uganda and to make people around the world aware about it, Invisible Children released a video on March 5, 2012, that aims to educate people about Joseph Kony and the genocide in Uganda.

The documentary “Kony 2012” focuses on the issues which includes the LRA's use of child-soldiers to fight for their group. The 29-minute short documentary gives viewers an inside look at the sufferings of Ugandans in a commentary given by an ex-child soldier named Jacob.

According to the organization, their mission is to make Joseph Kony famous, not to celebrate him, but to raise support for his arrest and set a precedent for international justice.

The documentary has become a viral hit and has been shared nearly 4 million times on Facebook in the past week.

Kony escaped in 2005, but United States has not ignored the matter. According to the Miami Herald, special operation forces were sent last year to help the Ugandans in their search for the leader.

The documentary is directed by Jason Russell who said that, “the day when we will meet at sundown and blanket every street in every city until the sun comes up. The rest of the world will go to bed Friday night and wake up to hundreds of thousands of posters demanding justice.”
