BMW AG will recall 1.3 million BMW 5 and 6 series cars built between 2003 and 2010 for improperly mounted battery cable covers.

The improperly mounted battery cable covers can result in electrical system malfunctioning, failure of the car to start and charring or fire, the company said in an announcement Monday. No accidents or injuries as a result of the defect have been reported.

Munich-based BMW will contact owners of the vehicles in writing, and the repairs will be carried out free of charge.

BMW 5 and 6 series cars made up almost 25 percent of sales for the company in 2011.

BMW paid a $3 million fine to the U.S. National Highway Transportation Safety Administration in February as a result of investigations related to the 2010 recall of 330,000 vehicles, Reuters reported.

Representatives from BMW were unavailable for comment. BMW stock was up 0.94 percent to €68.69 ($91.54) Monday.
