French Road Elementary School in Brighton, New York, was one of 19 schools in the state to receive the National Blue Ribbon School designation.

The National Blue Ribbon School award honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools based on students' academic excellence or for the schools' progress in closing achievement gaps, especially among disadvantaged and minority students

This year, 304 schools received such designation.

The Board appreciates this recognition for French Road Elementary School and believes it is a reflection of great school and district leadership, dedicated parents, staff, and a community that supports excellence every day, said Mark Kokanovich, president, Brighton Board of Education, in a statement issued on its Web site.

Other recipients were 21 California schools, which include four in Los Angeles County and four in Orange County. Eleven public and private schools in Virginia were also honored to name a few.
