In direct defiance of her father’s policies and views, Barbara Bush, one of former President George W. Bush’s twin daughters, supports gay marriage. She has taped a video which calls for the state of New York to legalize same-sex marriage.

New York voters had defeated a bill providing for marriage equality in 2009.

“I am Barbara Bush, and I am a New Yorker for marriage equality,” she said in the message. “New York is about fairness and equality. And everyone should have the right to marry the person that they love.”

The video was made by The Human Rights Campaign, a national gay rights group.

Her father, while in the White House, sought a constitutional amendment to prohibit such marriages.
Barbara Bush follows in the footsteps of another child of a prominent Republican, Meghan McCain, daughter of John McCain, to embrace same-sex marriage.

Barbara’s mother, Laura, also appeared to support gay unions during a television interview last spring.
