Actress Dakota Fanning, 17, has landed the cover of Cosmopolitan, a lifestyle magazine known for its sex advice and fashion and dating tips. The fact that the teen snagged the cover of such a magazine has caused controversy and many are asking if she is too young to be on the cover.

Among some of the features in Cosmopolitan are the topics of Sex &Love, Sex Positions, Crazy Sex Positions, 31 Days of Hot Sex and more. Many would say these are adult topics (18 and older).

Fanning turns 18 next month and she can be seen on the cover of the magazine's February issue in a figure-hugging pink gown, smoke eye makeup and perfectly groomed and shiny blonde hair.

She looks grown, but is still a minor, surrounded by captions such as Too Naughty to Say Here: But You Have to Try This Sex Trick, His Best Sex Ever and Um Vagina Are You Okay Down There?

A representative for the magazine told Fox News that they are thrilled to have Fanning on the cover and that she looks stunning.

Dakota, who turns 18 this month, is a mature, fearless young woman and we are proud to honor her as our Fun Fearless Female of the year, the rep said. We applaud her unprecedented accomplishments which will continue in 2012 with her four upcoming movie roles.

Some didn't like that decision.

Cosmopolitan is going overboard by putting an underage girl on its cover surrounded by such article titles, media expert Rachelle Friberg told FOX411's Pop Tarts column. It is one thing to educate young women about sex and their bodies, but putting a young, underage girl on the cover of a magazine that had long been known to push the limits is sending the wrong message.

According to IMDb, Fanning was born in Conyers, Ga., on Feb. 23, 1994. She became a child star, landing roles in the movie Tomcats and I Am Sam in 2001 before moving on to other roles in Trapped and playing the younger version of Reese Witherspoon in Sweet Home Alabama both in 2002.

But Fanning isn't the only young Hollywood star, or any star for that matter, to have had a controversial magazine cover.
