UPDATE 3:40 p.m. EST: The coast is clear.

Original story:

The Washington, D.C., Police Department has shut down a portion of the city to traffic Friday due to “police activity.”

The department did not elaborate on the reason for the closures on its Twitter account, but Washington Post reporter Peter Hermann wrote that the 10-square-block area around 1200 North Capitol St. NW was closed due to a potential pipe bomb in an apartment building.

“Police and fire have not confirmed pipe bomb – they are checking situation out now,” Hermann tweeted. “Roads closed as a precaution.”
