EBay Inc's online payments service, PayPal, shut down worldwide for about an hour on Monday after the Internet retailer encountered internal problems, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

The outage began at 10:30 AM Pacific Time and affected all users for about an hour, the Journal said. Most customers had regained service as of four hours later though some remained offline, the Journal cited an eBay official as saying.

PayPal is the world's largest Internet-based payment system and normally handles $2,000 in online commerce a second, the newspaper reported. eBay spokesmen were not available for comment.

EBay shares, which gained 3.7 percent in the regular session, dipped a marginal 3 cents to $22.01 in after-hours trading.
